Young Carers

Are you a young carer? Are you under eighteen and helping to look after someone at home in the areas of North Hykeham, Lincoln, Market Rasen, Caistor or Gainsborough ? The Share the Care Young Carers Project can  help you.

The Young Carers Project, is run by Share the Care for young people under the age of eighteen who are involved in caring for someone who  is sick, physically disabled, has mental ill health or a learning disability. They often care for a relative e.g. a parent, brother or sister and the young carer may be the only carer or may be assisting someone else in the family home to care.

Share the Care's Young Carers Project aims to support young people who are taking responsibility for others because of an illness or  disability. The service provided to the young carers is dependent  upon their needs but will include 1:1 support, information and the opportunity to meet other young carers through a range of services.

The Young Carers Project offers support groups. The aim is to  encourage peer support - to facilitate meeting other young people in  a similar position and, through social activity, develop social  skills and provide a break from the caring role. The Project also runs activity days and outings.

Raising awareness about Young Carers using their voice is also part  of the Project's work and this has been undertaken through the  production of a newsletter, a video by the Young Carers themselves and involvement in consultation and research on a range of issues.  The Project Workers continually work to raise the profile of Young Carers and their needs through networking and training across all  agencies, including Education, Health, Social Services, Careers and  Voluntary Organisations.  The Young Carers Project also has its own website www.caringcrew.co.uk which was developed by Young Carers and is regularly updated.  It provides information on a wide range of topics to provide Young Carers with support including bullying, how to keep safe on the internet and healthcare.

If you are an adult and are concerned about a young person you know  who needs support but you feel unable to help, then make a referral. Share the Care will be able to offer support, advice, information and training.

Quotations from Young Carers

"The Lincoln carers are some of the luckiest in the country  (well I think so anyway!)" A 13 year old talking about a support group.

"I enjoyed the support group. It helped talking, sorting our problems and seeing other people like you." (Aged 12)
